A list of to-do’s I’m starting with. I’ll be adding and subtracting from the list as we move along.
This article lists good ideas such as canceling Prime, dumping Whole Foods, starting a garden, getting involved in local politics, supporting independent media, paying cash, building your community.
+Economic Black Out Day is February 28, 2025. A day of no buying, no spending, no engaging with their systems. An economic resistance day. There are several groups organizing a calendar of other strike days, but this is the main one I have heard of. An amendment I’ve heard is that instead of shopping at big box stores, buy from your local, independent shops.
+5 Calls gives the phone numbers of your representatives, a list of issues to call them about, and a script to read if you are nervous. AMAZING and so easy to do. Representatives can easily ignore emails, but not so easily phone calls. There has been a flood of calls and we need to keep going.
+Find your local farmers market, CSA, or food co-op. Local and small are going to be extremely helpful for you and for your community.
+Update your Passport and Drivers License
+Download copies of your Social Security statements
+Have a birth control plan like this, or like this
+When I say find your community, this could be a book club or garden club, a choir or community theater group…anything that brings you closer to people who you can all turn to and count on in a moment of need. Sometimes you just need people to yell with.
+If you see a need in your community, do your part to help. Could you organize a food drive? A blood drive? Could you take in clothing or toys for families in need? Could you share your garden harvest with another family?
+Are you a member of PBS? What a good time to start!
+If you can set up a monthly donation schedule, now is also a great time to start that. Think ACLU, Southern Poverty Law, Planned Parenthood, food banks, the Red Cross, or a local non-profit that could use a bit of help.
Such a small list for such difficult times, but I will always believe that love trumps hate, that communities are stronger than companies, and that humans are designers and creators and we have the ability to dream and build a really beautiful future together.
In solidarity,
Heidi
